I love any tips that can make short work of common household chores. This one is very short and sweet! It’s a great tip to freshen a vacuum cleaner bag.
Dryer sheets make your laundry softer to the touch and add a great smell to them as well. They also neutralize the effects of built-up static in most fabrics.
Today, well be using them in a bag in a vacuum cleaner instead.
After prolonged uses of a vacuum cleaner, the smell of lint and dust can be unpleasant. Dryer sheets can change all that!
When you change the bag on your upright vacuum cleaner, add an unused fabric softener sheet inside the bag.
Now instead of a musty smell from the lint and dog hair, your vacuum cleaner will smell fresh as you clean the house!

Cleaning a canister vacuum cleaner
This step is a quick fix that works well with upright vacuum cleaners which have a bag. To clean a canister vacuum cleaner, a little more elbow grease is necessary.
Unplug the vacuum cleaner and remove the canister. Wipe the inside with a microfiber cloth.
Wash the inside of the canister with warm soapy water and rinse well. Allow to dry before reassembling.
Note on cleaning a vacuum cleaner with baking soda.
Many sites suggest that baking soda should be used to clean a vacuum canister.
Baking soda is super-absorbent and gives everything a fresh smell. It is also antimicrobial , very inexpensive and has lots of uses around the house and garden. Some people even sprinkle it on carpets before vacuuming.
However, baking soda is thought by some to damage a vacuum cleaner, so I don’t recommend using it, even if diluted, especially in a vacuum cleaner with no filter.
My husband cleans our vacuum cleaner by rinsing it out with just soap and water after every few uses, and it never has an odor.
