Southern cooking…some call it soul food. Some call it hearty food. Others say it is all about the seasonings. I say that southern cooking is just plain delicious. Whether your love is hush puppies, biscuits and gravy, or rich and hearty muffins, the taste says divine and the food says “cooked with love.”

Celebrate The 49th Annual Country Music Awards with some southern cooking.
When Martha White approached me to try their baking products in a recipe for my blog, and I learned that they were a sponsor of the upcoming 49th Annual Country Music Awards, I jumped at the chance! Two things come to mind for me when I think of the south…southern cooking and country music. What better way to celebrate both than to make a southern recipe to enjoy on the night of the awards!
Life is really busy for me right now, so I wanted to make this meal quick and easy. I knew that Martha White had a whole host of baking products that would help me do this, and wanted to find just the right one to use in my upcoming recipe.
Finding the products was easy. I just headed to the bakery aisle…’cause that’s where any southern gal (from Maine with an English husband!) is “gonna find baking mixes, right?
How about some “cotton country” shortbread. ’cause nothing quite says country like both cotton and shortbread? √ I was so lucky to find them on sale on this shopping trip. (All stores vary as to promotions, so you may not have luck on your side like I did.)
Like I said…finding the aisle was easy. Choosing the baking mix proved to be the hard part. Choices, choices…. Every kind of muffin you could ever want to make has found its way into one of Martha White’s baking mixes.
Then I thought – “How about starting early in the morning of the awards day with some of Martha’s hearty muffin mixes?” She has a flavor all southern music loving fans will enjoy. Jeepers… blueberrry cheesecake, pumpkin spice, banana nut, yellow corn muffin and just about every other flavor you could imagine! When it was all said and done, I got my inspiration, and decided to make a day of it. Muffins in the morning and a Southern country pot pie with cotton country cornbread topping for dinner and the CMA Awards.
So into the cart went loads and loads of fresh veggies. You can’t make a chicken pot pie without them, can you?Be sure to check out the recipe for Chicken pot pie with Cornbread topping. It will make a southern cooking lover out of the most northern reader among you and is perfect to enjoy the night of the awards!
And while you are at it, have a look at this list of this year’s nominees, and join Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood on award night, November 4, 2015, and sample this northern gal’s version of southern cooking.
The 49th Annual Country Music Awards will be a fun night with dozens of performances and countless special moments. Watch as the Country Music industry honors its finest entertainers and celebrates 49 years of country music excellence.
