DIY Music Sheet Coasters – Perfect for That Special Cup of Tea

These DIY Music Sheet Coasters are the perfect way to put me in just the right mood when I take a break for some much needed “me time.”

I have such a busy life. There seems to never be enough time to get everything done that I need to do. Sound familiar?

With the endless gardening tasks, also comes a need to take the occasional break, and what better way to do this than to relax with a soothing cup of tea?  Tool caddy, cup of tea and music coasters with words reading DIY Music Sheet Coasters.

Each one of the coasters is covered with sheet music.  I majored in music when I went to college, so I love any type of craft that has a music theme.

Just seeing the music on the coasters makes me smile.

What is even better is that each coaster has a pretty silhouette word that embodies some of the things that are important to me. Add in a warm cup of tea and you have a recipe for instant relaxation.

Ready to make some DIY Music Sheet Coasters?

These DIY Music Sheet Coasters are very easy to make and need only a few supplies. I used these supplies:

  • cork coasters
  • black vinyl stick on silhouette letters
  • Mod Podge(or other clear acrylic sealer,)
  • clear spray varnish
  • 2 pieces of heavy scrapbook paper with music notes.  (They gave a nice thick top to the coaster and were very easy to work with.)Supplies for music sheet coasters

My cork coasters had a pretty good edge finish to them but, if you have older coasters that are frayed, you may need to sand the edges a bit to make them smooth.

Using a pencil, trace around the outside of the coaster on the sheet music and then cut out the shapes. Try to position the shape so that the music lines are somewhat centered for best effect.Round music sheet shapes

The next step is to add Mod Podge to both the top of the coaster and the back of the music shapes.

You will want a reasonable amount of it but not too much. Be sure to bring the sealer all the way to the edge of the coaster so the paper will stick well.Add Mod Podge to the coaster

Press down well, particularly around the edges and then use an old credit card to push out any excess sealer and trapped air bubbles. It will dry fairly quickly so this step is pretty fast.Remove air bubbles with a credit card

Once the sealer is dry and the sheet is well attached and smooth, add another layer of the Mod Podge to the top of the coaster.  Once again, it dries pretty quickly.Adding Mod Podge to the top of the sheet music

Time for our Relaxing Words!

Now comes the part that I like the best.  Think of words that mean a lot to you, and put you in a good mood. For me, the words were Calm, Love, Home, Enjoy, Sleep, and Joy.

I used black script adhesive silhouette letters for my coasters. If you have a silhouette machine, you can make your own transparent letters.Add script stick on letters to the top of the coasters

Attach each word to the center of the coasters on an angle.  I had originally been meaning to make four coasters, but I liked them so much I found another two old wooden coasters that were a little smaller and covered them, too.

I like the slight contrast of the top of the coasters as sort of “book ends” to the set.

Add another layer of Mod Podge to the top of the coasters and over the letters of your mood words. Also add a coat of the sealer to the edges of the coasters. Allow everything to dry thoroughly.Seal the letters and edges of the coasters.

Once the DIY Music Sheet Coasters are totally dry, apply two coats of clear spray varnish on them, making sure to allow them to dry completely between the coats.

This gives the coasters a finish that will withstand drips of the tea and other moisture and also gives them a nice semi gloss finish.Apply spray varnish to the coasters.

I just love the farmhouse look of these DIY Music Sheet Coasters. They have a nostalgic look that goes with any sort of cottage chic home decor.
